Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce looks set to leave Kevin Davies on the bench for Saturday's trip to
Manchester United after admitting he is worried over the fitness of his key striker.
Davies was expected to return to the starting line-up for the lunchtime trip to Old trafford after missing the last six weeks with a chipped bone in his ankle.
But Allardyce, who has seen his side slip out of contention for a finish inside the Champions League places after back-to-back Premiership defeats, has revealed he may leave Davies on the bench, despite being unhappy with the way the Trotters are performing.
"Kevin hasn't played for six weeks and only trained for the first time this week," he said.
"He hasn't been able to kick a ball in that time and it would be a huge risk to play him on Saturday in such an important game.
"I will continue to assess his fitness over the next couple of days and make a decision before kick-off.
"We are certainly going to need a top performance if we are to get anything out of the game."
