No excuses from Megson
03 Dec 2007 - 08:50:34
Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson struggled to take any positives out of Sunday's grim display by his team in the 4-0 defeat at Liverpool.
The paucity of the performance was in sharp contrast to last weekend's win against Manchester United although Bolton did waste a great chance to equalise when Nicolas Anelka contrived to miss an open goal.
"I can't dress it up, this has brought us back down to earth," said Megson.
"We didn't play well and we didn't compete in the way we did against Manchester United.
"We have to make sure we do the things we do best, and we certainly didn't match the standards we set ourselves against United.
"Maybe the turning point was when Nicolas Anelka missed that chance when we were 1-0 down.
"That's not like him, but it's very rare that he makes a mistake like this so I'll not blame him for that.
"We'd conceded a bad goal from our point of view, a header in the box, and we didn't have people in that area who should have defended it.
"Their penalty was a soft one. If you start giving them for things like that there will be three or four penalties a game.
"But this result will not change the things we will be doing here - playing to our strengths and bringing the sort of people into the club who can help us."
