Megson plans bigger squad
22 May 2009 - 15:30:25
Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson is aware that he needs to have a bigger squad at the Reebok Stadium next season.
Megson has managed to guide the Trotters to a mid-table finish despite having one of the smallest squads in the Premier League but is keen to embark on a busy summer of wheeling and dealing.
"I think there needs to be a switch of perception, not just at this club but at a lot of football clubs of what we're actually competing for," he said.
"I think this is the most difficult league in the world by a street. You only have to look at the semi-finals again of the Champions League.
"If you look at the finances available to Tottenham, Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa, and all these people, it's not so much a pecking order, but there are a lot of huge, huge football clubs in the Premiership.
"I think the position we're in at the moment is decent, but it isn't something where we want to just sit back and say that's as good as we can do. I think we can do better if we've got better.
"One of the things that's happened to us this season, and I've just been looking it, is that we've run with a squad of 23 players, which is including Joey O'Brien, who's not been fit right through the season.
"Of those 23, three are on loan, so we've been running with an outfield squad of 16 and we certainly need more than that, and that's something we need to address."
