Megson offers Davies backing

Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson is confident that striker Kevin Davies will not be too badly affected by his recent England snub.

Davies failed to make the final 23-man squad for the games against Slovakia and Ukraine, but Megson retains full faith in his Trotters captain.

He told reporters: "I was disappointed for Kevin, but he has got to keep plugging away.

"It would have been great to see him in there. He's just got to keep doing what he's been doing and if the opportunity comes along, he takes it.

"I don't know how long the long squad is because he seems to bring in quite a few players. But the manager is beyond any criticism because of the results they have been getting.

"That's what he's judged on and he's getting the results. He is aware of what Kevin can do, but he went with someone else.

"I have spoken briefly to Kevin about what's happened, but he's not too despondent."
