Megson delighted for Gardner
03 Nov 2008 - 07:47:21
Gary Megson praised goalscoring substitute Ricardo Gardner as Bolton Wanderers moved out of the relegation zone with an impressive 2-0 victory against big-spending Manchester City on Sunday.
The 30-year-old opened the scoring with 13 minutes left as the Trotters secured their first victory at the Reebok Stadium since the opening weekend of the campaign.
After Gardner had scored his first Premier League goal for almost six years, Megson said: "I was delighted for him. He's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet - not just in football.
"The only reason he's not been in the side is that Matty Taylor's set-pieces are very good and he gives us a little bit more of a goal threat.
"But Bibi (Gardner) came on and we put Matty on to the other side, and Bibi has scored the first goal and made the second.
"He wasn't out of the team through any other reason than we need to score goals but he's now come in and done that. I'm really pleased."
Bolton fans again booed Megson during the game, but the Wanderers boss added: "As I've said before, if they're going to abuse anybody, it's better if I get it.
"They need to support the team and the support in the second half, when we really had that momentum, was as good as you're going to hear."
