Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson revealed Jussi Jaaskelainen will miss the rest of the season following their defeat at Wigan Athletic.
Jaaskelainen missed Thursday's UEFA Cup exit at the hands of Sporting Lisbon and was also omitted from the squad that lost 1-0 at their near-neighbours on Sunday with Ali Al-Habsi earning a rare start.
The result left the Trotters languishing in 18th place in the table and afterwards Megson revealed the potentially costly loss of the veteran Finland keeper for the rest of the campaign with a back problem.
"He needs six weeks of rest to try and resolve his problem and he is also going to need some form of surgery," he claimed.
"Either way, his season is over."
Meanwhile on the performance, an angry Megson warned his side that they need to buck up their ideas if they are to avoid relegation.
"We have to wake up very quickly," he warned.
"Hopefully they will now recognise we're in the bottom three, but if we keep doing what we did today then we will stay in the bottom three.
"We have to roll our sleeves up and start doing what everybody else is doing around us, which is battling, scrapping, putting in a good shift and accepting our position."
