Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has been asked to explain his critical comments about referee Mark Clattenburg by the Football Association.
Davies suggested that Clattenburg had a personal problem with him after ruling out what he felt was a legitimate goal during the goalless draw with Fulham last weekend.
However, his comments could lead to FA action after they wrote to the Wanderers frontman seeking clarification on the matter.
Speaking after the match at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, Davies had said: "When I saw who was the referee I didn't expect to get anything off him. Over the years I have never got much from him.
"There was a penalty at Old Trafford last season and he did nothing - but I got a booking.
"Numerous bookings over the years - I don't know, I have always felt there is something personal there.
"Every time he referees us, I don't expect to get anything."
