Davies retains England hopes
14 Feb 2009 - 11:34:09
Bolton Wanderers captain Kevin Davies says he still holds out hope of earning a call-up to the senior England squad.
The 31-year-old striker is one of the Premier League's most consistent performers, but has failed to catch the eye of a succession of England coaches, mainly due to a lack of goals.
He told the Bolton News: "Everyone knows I'll never be a prolific goalscorer, but I have brought a lot more to the team than that. Over the years, players have scored quite a few goals from my assists.
"I've always hoped that one day I'd get in there (England) and give it a shot.
"Maybe one day if I can keep scoring then I'll come to Fabio Capello's attention. The only thing that has let me down in the past is the number of goals I have scored.
"This year I have scored a few, so maybe one day I can earn a couple of caps.
"In my younger days I might have had a chance, but then picked up an injury and it has never quite happened.
"But you never know, I'll not announce my international retirement just yet.
"Unless you are at one of the big clubs it is difficult to break in, but I think we have got a few players here who could do a job with England if they were given a chance."
