Davies eyes new signings
Bolton captain Kevin Davies believes that the club are just a few signings away from becoming a top 10 Premier League side. The Trotters finished 13th last season but never looked capable of pushing into the top half of the table, however the striker is confident that that can change next season. Manager Gary Megson has admitted that he may get his side to play a more expansive game next term if he can sign the kind of quality players he has expressed an interest in. The former West Brom boss has made a fresh bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, thought to be around £10million, after the club were priced out of a move in January and Davies declares that the club are in desperate need of strengthening their small squad. "I read the papers and look on a few websites and you see some people were not particularly happy at the end of the season," he said. "But to have played with such a small squad all year and finish 13th, and with clubs like Newcastle United going down, then I think the players deserve a lot of credit for what they achieved. "We would have liked to have finished higher of course but I don't think we are too far away from doing that with the set of lads we have got here. Quality signings "If we can sign a couple of quality players over the summer, just to give us a push in the right direction, then I think we can get into the top 10." The Trotters had to operate with one of the smallest squads in the top flight last year with just 21 players in total starting Premier League games and the 32-year-old believes competition for places can only be a good thing. "It is nothing against the lads who are already here but sometimes you just need a bit of quality to come in a change things around a bit, to freshen things up and give you something different," he told the Bolton News. "If you are training all week and there is someone on your shoulder for your place in the team, then it makes you train that little bit harder. "We have lacked that in some positions and I'm sure the gaffer will be looking to put it right over the summer. "We have got a good base here, a good set of lads, and I genuinely think we can start moving forward now."
