Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies faces six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a depressed fracture of a cheekbone in the 2-0 loss at Charlton Athletic.
Davies suffered a nightmare afternoon at The Valley on Saturday, being sent off 18 minutes from time after earlier being elbowed in the face by Addicks defender Hermann Hreidarsson.
Trotters boss Sam Allardyce told the club's official website: "It is terrible news for Kevin and the squad.
"I feel for Kevin. He is the ultimate professional who always gives his best no matter what strain he is under from opposition defenders.
"Kevin doesn't get the protection he deserves from referees. He is constantly put under duress by defenders and he never feigns injury or tries to con the referee.
"He is a honest professional who deserves to be protected more by the officials."
