Coyle: Tough call to leave out Ricketts
04 Oct 2010 - 11:24:44
Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle admitted that it was tough on defender Sam Ricketts to drop him from the starting line-up for the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion.
Ricketts has been in fine form in recent weeks, but Coyle opted to recall Gray Cahill after the England man completed a three-match suspension.
He told the Bolton News: "I've made some big decisions in my football career, but that was one of the toughest.
"Gary Cahill is a quality player but Sam Ricketts has been outstanding. I sat and tried to explain to Sam and he should be disappointed because I had more than 11 players who deserved to start.
"That's the job of being a manager. Sam's got a big, big part to play at this football club.
"But Gary Cahill is a top centre-half and if you name any centre-half in this country, I'll take Gary Cahill every day.
"Gary Cahill has come through the disappointment of not playing for England against Switzerland and the sending-off at Arsenal and come back with a perfect performance."
