Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce accepted that his side had been put firmly in their place in Saturday's 4-0 home drubbing by Manchester United.
The Trotters chief admitted that the result showed that his club are nowhere near capable of challenging for top honours in the Premiership, despite their current lofty position of third.
He told the Bolton Evening News: "It shows exactly where we are as a Premiership side and exactly where the big boys lie.
"We might be close to them in table terms, but in terms of power, spending power and quality of squad, it showed that, when we come up against the top boys when they are on song, it's very difficult.
"Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say, on the day, we could not compete with them.
"Our lads were trying to get near them, but, because they spent so little time on the ball, they were actually chasing shadows.
"We lost the game in the first 20 minutes because Manchester United were so good, it's that simple."
