Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson praised the commitment and work-rate of his players after they booked their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup by knocking out Atletico Madrid.
The Trotters led 1-0 from the first leg at the Reebok Stadium last week and successfully kept the Spanish giants at bay during the return meeting in Madrid on Thursday night to reach the last 16 stage for the first time in their history.
Bolton were on the back foot for the majority of the 90 minutes at the Vicente Calderon, but held firm to secure a famous European scalp.
"It's a good night for us. In terms of passing and creative football we didn't play as well as I know we can, but in terms of heart and desire, enthusiasm and work-rate, we were marvellous," enthused Megson.
"That is no surprise for me because we have always been like that ever since I've been at the football club.
"We didn't set out purposely to defend, we got pushed back by a very good team.
"I believe that's the furthest that we've ever been in Europe, and to get to this stage given the teams that we have had to play, is a great testament to the squad that we've got, not just the team."
