Wolves 2 Bolton 3: Crucial win for Owen Coyle

31 March 2012 18:05
Wolves fans may bemoan their luck after besieging Bolton for 50 minutes, taking a second-half lead but still ending up with nothing. [LNB]But luck had nothing to do with a result that leaves the home team six points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League and now looking certainties for relegation. [LNB]Yes, Wolves completely dominated the first half, with chance after chance blocked, saved, kept out by the woodwork or otherwise going close. [LNB] Euphoria: Marcos Alonso celebrates after scoring with a horde of delighted Bolton fans[LNB]MATCH FACTSWolves: Hennessey, Stearman, Johnson, Bassong, Ward, Kightly, Davis (Henry 87), Edwards (Milijas 87), Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake (Doyle 81), Fletcher[LNB]Subs Not Used: De Vries, Hunt, Berra, Zubar[LNB]Booked: Stearman[LNB]Goals: Kightly 53, Jarvis 88[LNB]Bolton: Bogdan, Ricketts, Ream, Wheater, Alonso, Miyaichi (Eagles 77), M Davies, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Klasnic (K Davies 70), Ngog (Knight 90)[LNB]Subs Not Used: Jaaskelainen, Boyata, Sordell, Vela[LNB]Booked: Klasnic[LNB]Goals: Petrov 63 pen, Alonso 80, K Davies 84[LNB]Attendance: 25,215[LNB]Referee: Jon Moss (W Yorkshire)[LNB]Yes, they deserved to be 1-0 up afteroutstanding Michael Kightly collected a pass on the right, cut inside Bolton's Marcos Alonso and slammed a 25-yard left-foot shot across goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and into the corner of the net. [LNB]And yes, they might feel aggrieved that Bolton's equaliser for 1-1 came via a disputed penalty earned by one of their former Academy players, Wolverhampton-born Mark Davies, andconverted by Martin Petrov. [LNB]But this match was also a season in microcosm, one of missed opportunities, lost leads and blaming everyone but themselves. [LNB]It also involved a first-half bust-upwhen Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey almost came to blows with his own captain, Roger Johnson, after the latter failed to make an effectiveclearance. [LNB]Bolton, in contrast, were unflustered, tireless, dogged and even sparky late on. They scored through Alonso and Kevin Davies, and then held out under pressure after Matt Jarvis had made it 3-2. Wolves manager Terry Connor called the penalty a 'dubious decision' that had a 'massive effect' on the game. [LNB]But minimal though the contact was between Roger Johnson on Davies, there did appear to be contact. Any is too much. Connor's counterpart, Owen Coyle, whose team have won three straight Premier League games for the first time in six years, felt it was a legitimate spot-kick. [LNB]'This is a massive three points for us, especially in game at the business end of the season,' said Coyle. [LNB] Cool: Martin Petrov strokes home the equaliser from the spot[LNB] Opener: Michael Kightly broke the deadlock[LNB]'We had to stand up and be brave and resolute in the first half and Adam Bogdan made a couple of great saves.I had to be delighted with 0-0 at half-time, and when Wolves went ahead, given all that's happened recently [a reference to Fabrice Muamba], my lads could've been forgiven for feeling sorry for themselves. But they never gave in.' [LNB]Wolves have not kept a clean sheet in 28 games and have not won at home in any competition since December. [LNB]Connor has won just one point in 18 since taking over from Mick McCarthy, a man who described yesterday's fixture as 'must win' for Wolves.
