Steinsson rates Megson

Gretar Steinsson believes Gary Megson does not get the credit he deserves for the job he has done at Bolton. Less than 12 months ago the Trotters were scrapping desperately for their Premier League lives, with an ill-fated spell under the guidance of Sammy Lee seeing them in trouble for much of the campaign. Megson was brought in to rescue the club, which he duly did, and has all but secured Bolton's top-flight standing for another year this time around. That, though, has not been enough to win over a sceptical minority that have failed to move on from the heady days of Sam Allardyce's time in charge at the Reebok Stadium. Steinsson believes those that continue to question Megson need to put things into perspective, with the Icelandic full-back of the opinion that the Trotters continue to punch above their weight. "Gary has done a fantastic job here at Bolton," he said. "When I came here the place was a mess basically and there were a lot of negative things going on. "Since then we turned it around in a short period of time. Gary has done well, even though he has had his criticism. "I think we need to look at the big picture money-wise and how big we are and in which league we are. "We need to curtail the negativity and be positive." Concentration Bolton have accrued 40 points from their 36 games in the 2008/09 campaign and, barring a disaster, will remain among England's elite next term. Attention has therefore turned to finishing the season in style, with maximum points from their last two games - against Hull City and Manchester City - possibly being enough to secure an 11th place finish. "It would be fantastic to get six points out of our last two games but we have to concentrate on our match on Saturday and getting three points there," added Steinsson. "It will be a big game for Hull - they will need everything out of that game and it is nice to be in a position to make or break their season. "We have got ourselves in a good position, secured ourselves and we should be proud even though we have been a bit stop-start at the end. "We did not start as well as we wanted and we were at the bottom so getting from there to where we are now is good and for a couple of weeks we have been basically safe."
