Portsmouth v Bolton live!

18 April 2009 14:10
90+5 Some tense, tense minutes but it is all over and Portsmouth have the three points! And what an important three points it could be. Bolton will still not be sweating just yet, but for Pompey, survival has moved one step closer[LNB]90+2 Johnson then unleashes a long-ranger to test Jaaskelainen, but once again the keeper is equal to it[LNB]90+1 Kanu exposes the committed Bolton attackers to get a free shot on the edge of the box, but Jaaskelainen saves well[LNB]89 Pennant heads on in place of Kaboul[LNB]88 Nadir Belhadj with another pitch-long run, but through on goal he can only blaze it over[LNB]87 Matt Taylor gets a 35-yard free kick but he blazes it well over. Bolton look beaten right now, but anything could happen...[LNB]85 Basham has a bash and it flies well over the bar for an ever more desperate Bolton[LNB]84 Kaboul nearly beats the offside trap to get himself in on goal, but Jaaskelainen is out quickly to smother[LNB]82 Belhadj races up the pitch and picks out Peter Crouch: bicycle kick specialist, however he blazes this acrobatic effort over[LNB]80 O.G or Kanu goal? It's not at all clear, but I suspect that McCann may just get the award[LNB]79 GOAL!!! And straight from the corner Portsmouth have their breakthrough! McCann appears to flick the ball on and Kanu forces the ball home for 1-0[LNB]78 Kaboul once again with the raid down the right, but his cross is headed behind for the corner[LNB]77 That's the end of his day and Belhadj takes his place[LNB]76 Kranjcar is calm but heavily strapped up as he is stretchered off[LNB]75 The medics are on and it looks like it could be a break...[LNB]74 McCann flies in on Niko Kranjcar and he looks in real pain with the ankle[LNB]73 Pompey have now moved to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation, but the transition is taking a bit of time with the passing sloppy in the past minute or two[LNB]71 Kanu comes on for David Nugent[LNB]69 Kaboul to the wing really is inspired from Paul Hart! He's been dodging and diving down the touchline all day and he earns his side a corner only for Crouch to foul the keeper in the box[LNB]67 1-0 would be more than enough for Pompey fan Sean Edwards at this point, who has found time to stop biting his nails to a stub and email in[LNB]66 Taylor is soon in the action again as Distin catches him while going for the ball and a break in play ensues[LNB]64 Matt Taylor goes for goal from the improbable angle, but swings his strike wide[LNB]63 That counter-attack that Peter Lowe promised comes to fruition and Elmander goes down fairly easily to grant Bolton a free-kick wide right[LNB]61 Back and forth goes the game, as Kranjcar's cross fails to beat the first defender at the front post[LNB]60 Oddly Nicky Hunt gets a yellow card. It's odd because he's not even on the pitch - just warming up down the touchline[LNB]59 But it's overhit and Bolton waste their foray up into the Pompey half[LNB]58 Corner for Bolton as a long ball causes some havoc in the box[LNB]57 Kranjcar takes his classic position of driving in from the right wing, but executes his pretty classic habit of not striking the ball cleanly and Jaaskelainen saves with ease[LNB]55 Well Portsmouth are continuing as they started off, playing some quality expansive football, without that vital end product so far[LNB]53 The previous lack of action on the emails was due to the fans being too busy biting their nails, Paul the Bolton fan says![LNB]52 He tries the clever switch of play to Hreidarsson though, which ends up being not so clever as Samuel clears[LNB]51 Free-kick to Pompey from range gives Kranjcar a chance to whip one in[LNB]50 Oh I see! Soaking up the pressure is what Bolton are doing according to Peter Lowe. A counter attack is imminent he assures me...[LNB]49 And Nugent is nearly in when Kranjcar whips a ball in that the Englishman can't control in the box[LNB]48 Kaboul gets in front of Peter Crouch to meet a Portsmouth corner, but he loops his header over to the annoyance of Crouchie[LNB]47 But I have to say, Bolton already look better this half, straying into the Pompey end on two occassions already[LNB]46 Finally a Pompey fan backing his boys! Teddy Zawoda wants to see a 2-0 second half display[LNB]45 And we're back in action![LNB]Kevin from Kingston, Jamaica will be no doubt disappointed to have seen his countryman Ricardo Gardner subbed early on, but he is backing Bolton for goals, goals and more goals after last week's three at Chelsea[LNB] If you fancy putting a spot of money on the clash then Portsmouth are now 13/10 with SkyBet, Bolton 3/1 and the draw 7/5. Oh, and you never know, Mr. Hreidarsson could still come up trumps...[LNB] Ah! The Bolton fans (well, fan) are emailing in with unprecedented confidence. Jack Cook fancies Bolton to stem the Portsmouth tide and emerge 2-0 winners, courtesy of Elmander and Taylor[LNB] Well the Pompey and Bolton fans might be reluctant to email in, but fantasy footballer followers such as Tom Stanley are positively in turmoil right now! He's cursing the profligacy of Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch in front of goal who he feels should be getting him some much needed points...[LNB]45+5 And finally, David Nugent curls a shot inches wide of the post before the referee blows for half-time. Thrilling stuff at times and Pompey will be wondering how they aren't ahead in this game?!?![LNB]45+4 Davis then comes up with a scuffed strike when the goal seemed welcoming[LNB]45+4 Pompey really applying the pressure as Kranjcar sees his edge of the box shot rebound clear in the congested area[LNB]45+3 It looks like Crouch is about to head home from close range, but the big man opts to nod it back for the Pompey runners...except there are none and the chance goes begging[LNB]45+1 O'Brien picks up a card for blocking off David Nugent down the right[LNB]45 In a bit of excitement, Johnson lays the ball off for Mullins, but yet again it's a poor, sliced attempt from the midfielder[LNB]43 Hmmm...by the drop in tempo, it looks as if both sides may be happy to see this out to half time[LNB]40 Disappointed that Pompey don't have the lead? Worried by the lack of Bolton chances? Let me know your thoughts via rob.carragher@bskyb.com[LNB]39 Well, the best chance of the game and Johnson could have had a hattrick already - something you won't expect to hear too often in his career...[LNB]38 Scrap that - Johnson breaks that lull by hitting the post! The defender swivels on the edge of the box and smashes a low drive which Jaaskelainen pushes on to the woodwork[LNB]36 Finally, a slight lull overtakes what has been a pretty high-octane opening[LNB]32 Kevin Davies - former Southampton man - receives a noisy reception for his yellow[LNB]30 And it's right back up the other end for Elmander to force a cracking low save from James as he races towards goal[LNB]29 A terrible mix up from Andy O'Brien. The defender puts a pass-back to Kranjcar who slots across goal to Glen Johnson - unfortunately for Pompey though, Johnson fires straight at Jaaskelainen to spurn a great chance[LNB]28 And it's just the boost that Pompey need as Nugent now drives at the Bolton back-line, before being thwarted[LNB]26 Great effort from Portsmouth! A driving run at goal from Glen Johnson is finished off with a rasping drive from range that Jaaskelainen just about forces away. Lovely stuff[LNB]24 Despite the barnstorming start from Portsmouth, Bolton are back in this game and it's a rather more even affair at the moment[LNB]23 Bolton earn themselves their own free-kick in a decent position, but Matt Taylor's delivery can't be directed towards goal[LNB]21 Lovely nutmeg from Glen Johnson 45-yards from goal, but a rush of blood then causes him to believe that he can float one over Jaaskelainen from that distance. Needless to say, he can't...[LNB]20 Back up the other end, a long throw is cleared to Gavin McCann on the edge of the box but he badly scuffs his attempted volley to spark some Pompey jeers[LNB]19 But Bolton clear his whipped delivery with relative ease[LNB]18 Hand ball from old boy Matt Taylor gives Niko Kranjcar a free-kick in a dangerous position...[LNB]17 Bolton make their first good attack of the game with McCann spinning free on the right, only to cross straight into the path of David James[LNB]16 A little scuffle between Kevin Davies and Hermann Hreidarsson brings a talking to from the referee and yet another break in play[LNB]14 Crouch has repeatedly been the target for the aerial balls from Portsmouth, but Andy O'Brien seems to have the rather considerable measure of him as he rises above to head clear once again[LNB]12 But this is the Premier League we're talking about and you wouldn't bet against a Bolton opener regardless of the balance of the play! Meanwhile, Ricardo Gardner looks badly injured so Fabrice Muamba comes on to take his place after a long break for treatment[LNB]9 Considering the quality of the opposition, this is the best opening that I have seen from Portsmouth recently. Really high-pace, high-passion stuff[LNB]7 The centre back-cum-wing wizard Youness Kaboul repeatedly beats his men at the line before crossing for a looping Peter Crouch volley that finds its way into the arms of Jaaskelainen[LNB]5 Pompey have shown a real appetite in the opening minutes that appears to have caught Bolton by surprise, but the Trotters are working their way back into the game[LNB]4 And the home side also manage the first shot as Hayden Mullins blazes over from the edge of the box[LNB]3 And there's no let up as Pompey swing in the first cross that just evades Peter Crouch at the back post[LNB]2 It's lighting out of the traps from Portsmouth though, who are yet to give their opponents a sniff of the ball[LNB]1 Bolton have the kick-off and we're underway on the south coast![LNB] He's not satisfied with where his Bolton side are sitting in the table, but Shaun Vernel from Leigh has full belief that his boys will be playing Premiership football next season: 'Bolton are going to win this game 3 - 1. I am not happy with our position in the table at the minute but I am definitely not worried about relegation. We have what it takes to stay up and there is no doubt in my mind that we will.'[LNB] Is it good enough that your team are still fearing the drop at this point in the season? Are you happy with the performances that your players are putting in? Let me know all this and more by emailing in to rob.carragher@bskyb.com at any point today and I'll get your best thoughts up on the site![LNB] And considering the aerial prowess of Hermann Hreidarsson, the Icelander is a very generous 28/1 with SkyBet for the first goal which may just tickle your fancy...[LNB] On the betting front, SkyBet are offering Portsmouth at 11/10 for the win, Bolton 13/5 to take the spoils and odds of 9/4 for the draw[LNB]Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Andrew O'Brien, Cahill, Samuel, Basham, McCann, Gardner, Kevin Davies, Elmander, Taylor. Subs: Al Habsi, Hunt, Muamba, Smolarek, Puygrenier, Makukula, Cohen.[LNB] Meanwhile, the away side have plumped for young Chris Basham as Fabrice Muamba settles for a place on the bench...[LNB]Portsmouth: James, Kaboul, Campbell, Distin, Hreidarsson, Johnson, Davis, Mullins, Nugent, Kranjcar, Crouch. Subs: Begovic, Pennant, Pamarot, Utaka, Hughes, Kanu, Belhadj.[LNB] Portsmouth have decided not to risk Jermaine Pennant after an injury scare last week, but Glen Johnson and Sean Davis are back in the starting line up after suspension and injury respectively...[LNB] The teams are in so here they are[LNB] Portsmouth on the other hand will be hoping for three points on an afternoon when six of their immediate relegation rivals are in action.[LNB] The shadow of relegation may still linger over both sides, but Bolton could reach the magic 40-point mark with a win today.[LNB] Good afternoon and welcome to our live minute-by-minute coverage of the game between Portsmouth and Bolton at Fratton Park![LNB]
