Portsmouth 2 Bolton 3: Cahill's late winner is hard on Pompey's strangers

13 September 2009 10:53
Poor Portsmouth. The troubled club played with spirit but lost to an anxious Bolton side who, according to their manager Gary Megson, gave the worst performance of a miserable season so far.

That's life at the bottom. Gary Cahill's 89th-minute winner not only brought Bolton their first points but condemned Portsmouth to the worst start in their history and kept them at the foot of the Premier League.

Paul Hart, having been forced to sell most of his best players in the summer, fielded eight new ones, included three making their debuts, and saw his team of strangers give a good account of themselves.
