Following the departure of Gary Megson last week, former Bolton player Coyle was favourite to take over at the Reebok Stadium.

For the first time today Burnley officially confirmed that Coyle has held discussions with Bolton.

Burnley 1 Manchester United 0: match reportCoyle had been on a family break in Scotland and was to return to Turf Moor on Tuesday but the manager told his players after the 2-1 FA Cup win at MK Dons that he is expecting an approach from Bolton and would like to speak to them.

Coyle, who signed a deal until 2013 after winning promotion last season, has an escape clause in his contract and Bolton are confident that compensation can be agreed.

Bolton are not in a hurry to appoint the new man for the imposing game at Arsenal in midweek but have laid on free coach travel for the trip to Sunderland on Saturday.
