On the Line: Unlikely figure of Gavin McCann set to expose murky world of transfers

05 September 2009 21:21
Gavin McCann hardly set the back pages alight when he moved from Aston Villa to Bolton for £1million two years ago but the transfer could yet be big news because of the High Court case due to kick off tomorrow in Manchester. [LNB]Agent Tony McGill is claiming breach of contract against McCann, alleging that he brokered the former England midfielder's move but was cut out of the deal at the last minute.[LNB] Bolton subsequently paid a leading agency, Sport Entertainment and Media Group, for acting for the club and evidence will be heard from leading figures at SEM and both clubs.[LNB][LNB][LNB] Case for the midfield: McCann (c) will go to court over a dispute involving agent fees[LNB]Arbitration between McGill and McCann failed and unless there is an11th-hour settlement, the mysterious workings of the transfer systemwill be laid bare for up to 10 days before Judge Waksman QC. [LNB]Among those following proceedings closely will be an observer fromthe Football Association, who are waiting for the legal process to endbefore deciding what action, if any, to take against those involved.[LNB] ..........................................................................................................................................................[LNB] [LNB] [LNB]FLINTOFF has a new trainer. Not Ashes hero Andrew, now recuperating from surgery designed to postpone the trip to the knacker's yard, but the horse named in his honour by close friend Paul Beck.[LNB] The Lancashire entrepreneur gave Flintoff a half-share in the horse as a wedding present four years ago but last week he stunned Venetia Williams by telling her the eight-year-old gelding and the four other horses she was training for him were being moved to the yard of Tim Vaughan.[LNB] It is believed the recession is biting at Beck's business, leading to cost-cutting in his racing interests. Beck was unavailable for comment but perhaps Freddie will aid the man who helped raise 2m as chairman of his benefit committee in 2006.[LNB]  ........................................................................................................................................................[LNB]   More from Dan King... Still not diving, Rooney? [LNB]Later this month will be the third anniversary of the Panorama programme in which he appeared to 'tap up' Middlesbrough youngster Nathan Porritt. Despite their outrage at the time, Middlesbrough never complained and the issue has been quietly dropped.[LNB] The FA will confirm in the coming weeks the outcome of their investigation into Panorama's other claims. As a youth player on Manchester City's books, he jumped into a training ground bath only to find it had just been painted in the club's colours.
