Megson will fight to keep Cahill

Bolton boss Gary Megson claims it would be "suicide" to sell star defender Gary Cahill. Reports over the weekend suggested Tottenham were weighing up a move for Cahill, while Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus have been mooted as potential suitors. Cahill has estabslished himself as one of the most promising young defenders in England since his move to Bolton from Aston Villa in January 2008. The 23-year-old has caught the eye of England coach Fabio Capello and has twice been called into the squad without yet winning a cap. Bolton tied down Cahill to a new deal in the summer, in the process removing a release clause from his contract, and Megson is determined to keep the player at the Reebok Stadium. "Football-wise it would be suicide to sell him in January," Megson told the Bolton News. "This club got itself into a nightmare scenario over Gary. "There was a set fee that he could have gone for. We did brilliantly in the summer to get rid of that and we're in a position now where we don't have to sell him." Megson is loath to lose Cahill if any clubs come calling for him when the transfer window re-opens in January after seeing Nicolas Anelka leave for Chelsea in the 2008 winter window. "Selling real assets in January is a nightmare," added Megson. "We've been there before with Nicolas Anelka, didn't win in 10 games and escaped relegation only by the skin of our teeth in the last five games."
