Megson hopes for Carling Cup run

Wanderers have begun the new season in disappointing fashion, suffering consecutive 1-0 defeats to Sunderland and Hull in the Premier League despite creating a host of opportunities. And with Liverpool next to visit the Reebok Stadium, few would blame Megson for viewing this evening's second round tie at Prenton Park as an undesirable distraction from the task of rejuvenating the team's league campaign. The match does, however, present a chance for Bolton's players to rediscover their scoring touch and Megson insists it is high time the club enjoyed some success in the cup. "Every game we play is an opportunity to kick on," he said. "This is an opportunity to get into the next round of the cup, so that's what we'll be looking at. "It's nothing to do with the game that's just gone, its nothing to do with the game that's coming up - its just a one-off, a cup tie and we want to put a strong side out. "I'd love to be in a position where we can go on a decent cup run, because it's never happened here. "The squad's been way too small - it is a bit bigger now, nowhere near big enough, but we want to try and do well in the cups." Megson has limited options up front and is looking to boost his forward line before the transfer window closes, but Bolton have been wasteful in front of goal and the manager has called upon record signing Johan Elmander to fill the gap left by Nicolas Anelka. "If we had scored five against Sunderland and seven against Hull we'd still need new personnel - we've only got two strikers," said Megson. "If you go right the way through the Premier League, my mate at Stoke Tony Pulis has got five or six down there, and Man City have got even more than that. "We haven't got the resources that some other clubs have got and that's why we couldn't hang on to Nicolas Anelka, never mind going to get another one. "But we have got Johan Elmander, a lot of resources were put in on him. "I said before Saturday that I don't want to put undue pressure on him, but he's got to start scoring goals - that's what he's here for. "I don't think there can be any more pressure on him, because everybody from the outside is starting to look at the fact that he's doing a lot of good things, but he isn't getting goals."
