Megson happy with Bolton progress

Bolton were held to a 0-0 draw by Sunderland at the Reebok Stadium but the point all but secured their Premier League status for another season. Currently 13th, Megson knows the chances of his team going down are negligible and, although it is not quite the European placing Bolton fans were used to under Sam Allardyce, it represents a significant improvement on the situation Megson inherited when he replaced Sammy Lee in October 2007, with the Trotters bottom of the table with just five points from 10 games. But Megson has still not won over the Reebok Stadium faithful and, in all probability, never will. It is not a position that bothers him too much, although, having assessed the work he has done, the former West Brom chief does not feel he has been given the credit he deserves. "It is not a new thing but there are a lot of bigger clubs than us who are in a much worse position," he reflected. "Since I came here, 24 players have left the club and only nine have come in. "Of the 24, only Nicolas Anelka, El-Hadji Diouf and Kevin Nolan are plying their trade in the Premier League, which would suggest that 21 out of that squad were not up to the demands we need. "That had to change but we do not have the resources to change it around quickly." Megson will attempt to freshen his squad up during the summer, while slightly adjusting the route one tactics that have proved so successful in keeping Bolton afloat. "We have a way of playing that has been set over seven or eight years," he said. "It is going to take a little bit of time, not so much to throw the baby out with the bath water, but to alter it a little bit. "We are not looking for credit or praise. We are just looking to move the club forward again."
