Bolton manager Gary Megson has defended Gary Cahill following the centre-back's poor display in the team's 5-1 thrashing at Aston Villa.[LNB]Cahill' s hopes of a place in the England World Cup squad were seriously damaged at Villa Park on Saturday as he made mistakes which led to Villa's second and third goals.[LNB]England hopes: Cahill dissapointed as Fabio Capello's staff watched on[LNB]Villa striker John Carew gave him a torrid afternoon. For Villa's second goal, Carew easily bustled beyond Cahill before crossing for Garbiel Agbonlahor to convert. For Villa's third, Carew knocked the ball through Cahill's legs before  going on to finish well.[LNB]With Fabio Capello's backroom staff present in the stands, it was an untimely woeful showing by Cahill. It was all the more embarrassing for the former Villa defender because he had said beforehand that he planned to show home manager  Martin O'Neill why he was wrong to sell him.[LNB]But Megson said: 'The lad is a good player. You don't get to where he's got to  playing like that. That was not a good game for Gary but he's in there with quite a few others. [LNB]'It's gone now and we've got to cope with the next 48 hours and then we've got to prepare for the Blackburn game.' [LNB] Fuming: Megson reacted angrily to the mistakes made by his players[LNB]Megson was animated on the touchline, regularly losing his temper. The fact Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jasskelainen had a decent  game, despite conceding five, showed how disappointing the rest of the side were.[LNB]Tormented: Carew (right) gave Cahill a tough time[LNB]'The only positives were the goalkeeper and the fans in the way they stuck with the team. But I don't think any of the 10 outfield players have got anywhere near to the standards that they would set  themselves.[LNB]'And they were certainly nowhere near the standards you would expect from the  Premier League.[LNB]'It is a big season for [Johan] Elmander and it was nice to see him on the scoresheet. He's found himself out of the team and whether that's been positive on him I don't know. [LNB]'Once that one went in, and made it 2-1, we had the momentum for a short time but we didn't use it.[LNB]'From the first minute, we looked a yard slower than Villa and we didn't even get near Carew.'[LNB] Aston Villa 5 Bolton 1: Carew inspires perfect return for captain Reo-CokerVilla Park will not be renamed by sponsor says manager O'NeillAston Villa v BOLTON: Paul Robinson brought in for banned Jlloyd SamuelChelsea 1 Manchester United 0: Head boy John Terry gives Blues a five-point lead in the title raceALL THE BOLTON WANDERERS FC NEWS FROM AROUND THE NET[LNB]  Explore more:People:John Carew, Fabio Capello, Gary Cahill, Gary MegsonPlaces:United Kingdom
