Megson - Cahill for England

Bolton manager Gary Megson has urged Gary Cahill to turn down the chance to play for Republic of Ireland. The Sheffield-born central defender has the option of playing for the Republic after revealing he is eligible because of his Irish grandparents, despite being called up to Fabio Capello's England squad in June. Cahill has yet to earn his first cap for the Three Lions, but Megson hopes he will not go green and give up on playing for England. "He's been made aware of the dual qualification but I hope his ambitions remain with England," he said in the Daily Star. "The last time I looked, Sheffield was in the middle of England. "It's just my opinion of course and it's up to him. It's purely a decision Gary must make but I think he should stick with England." Megson's Bolton side take on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday hoping to move away from the bottom end of the table. Cahill's defensive partner Zat Knight has praised his team-mate, and also said his good form reflects well on the group as a whole. "I think if he is getting the headlines, it shows what I've been doing as well - because we are playing together," he said. "With him getting into the England squad, I hope he can show a bit of what I and the rest of the team have been doing. "If someone from Bolton is getting into the England squad, our team must be doing something right. "I think centre-half is the hardest position to get into in the England team - you have got the captain at centre-half and Rio (Ferdinand), one of the best defenders in the country. "Then there's other centre-halves who are always in the squad like Matthew Upson - so it's tough. "But I think Gary Cahill is unlucky at times, because I really truly believe he should be given a chance in there."
