Give manager Megson a break, says Bolton defender Steinsson

Gretar Steinsson has urged the Bolton fans to lay off manager Gary Megson after he secured at least one more season of top-flight football. Saturday's sterile goalless draw with Sunderland took Bolton to 40 points and only a goalscoring miracle from Newcastle or Middlesbrough would send them down now. But Bolton supporters have been unhappy with their team's football for months and Megson's persistence with a one-man strikeforce of £12million Johan Elmander has increased the pressure. Home fans had to wait until the 93rd minute for an effort on target on Saturday and when Megson was spoken to in his technical area by Rob Styles, Bolton supporters jeered their manager and pleaded with the referee to send him to the stands. But Steinsson, who was signed in a £3.5m deal from AZ Alkmaar by Megson over a year ago, says fans should appreciate the work the boss has put in to maintain the club's place in the Barclays Premier League. Steinsson said: 'Overall this season we can be satisfied. We should have around six points more. We are better than our position shows. But we are safe and now there is plenty to work on over the summer so we can improve again next season. 'We should be positive about what we've achieved. There was a lot of negativity around the club when I came here. People weren't positive about anything regarding this club but since then we have been bringing in good players and changing a lot of things. 'You have to consider the amount of money we can spend and that last year was a really difficult season for us. This has been much better. We are a small club still and we try and build season by season. 'You look at the amount of money other teams are spending, where they are in the table and think about how difficult it is for a club like us. `Look at how much Sunderland have spent. We'd love to be able to spend a third of what they can.'
