Davis: Bolton can revive my career

Clapham-born Davis, 29, has joined the Trotters on a free transfer and could prove one of the best bits of business this summer. Megson was willing to pay £3.5million for the tenacious midfielder in January but saw his bid rejected by Portsmouth, leaving Davis to see out his contract at Fratton Park and head north as a free agent. Andy O'Brien and Matt Taylor have impressed since moving to the north-west and both men gave their old Pompey colleague a ringing endorsement of Megson. Davis said: "I have got some friends here already in Matt Taylor and Andy O'Brien who both spoke highly of the manager and the set-up. "It's always nice when there are familiar faces at a new club and I'm sure that it will help me to bed in with the rest of the squad. "Bolton have got modern facilities and a great stadium, plus I wanted to move to a club where I can play my football and be appreciated." Megson has won few popularity contests since he replaced Sammy Lee in October 2007. Back then Bolton were bottom of the Barclays Premier League with a pitiful tally of five points from their opening 10 games. In short, they were heading for the Coca-Cola Championship at pace. Megson stopped the rot, restored belief and has kept Bolton up in the past two seasons, despite the sale of key men such as Nicolas Anelka and Kevin Nolan. Davis is certainly a fan. "The manager was very enthusiastic and he seemed like he really wanted me," he added. "I felt really appreciated and confident about the way he was talking to me." Davis has a wealth of Premier League experience having accumulated nearly 200 top-flight appearances with Fulham, Tottenham and Portsmouth. He is also a former England Under-21 international, earning 12 caps between 2000 and 2002. Davis is aiming to repay Megson's faith in him by driving the club forward and avoiding another season of struggle. "Bolton showed a genuine interest in January and I found that hugely encouraging," said Davis. "It is an exciting opportunity, not just for me but my family as well. I'm really looking forward to getting back and I'll be raring to go at the start of the season. "I just want to come to Bolton and work hard, enjoy my football and take the club forward. "A lot of people thought it would be a hard decision, with me being a London boy, but it was one of the easiest ones I have ever had to make and I am looking forward to the challenge."
