Davies losing hope over England

Bolton striker Kevin Davies has conceded his dream of playing for England is fading fast. The former Southampton and Blackburn man was included in Fabio Capello's provisional 32-man squad for the recent friendly against Spain, but he failed to make the final cut. Davies was mentioned as a possible late call-up for the World Cup qualifying win over Ukraine after injuries to Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole and Darren Bent, but the 32-year-old was again overlooked by Capello. Davies now accepts his chances of representing his country are now looking slim. "I think it's pretty clear I am well down the pecking order," Davies told The Bolton News. Meanwhile, Bolton boss Gary Megson insists he holds no grudge against Capello for not giving Davies an opportunity in the England squad. "I thought Kevin might get the call," admitted Megson. "You cannot criticise Fabio because his job is to get results for England, regardless of who plays and how they play. "From our point of view, to have someone right near the top of the goal-scoring charts, it would have been a nice recognition for Kevin and the football club. "But there's no criticism from my point of view because you've got to get results and Fabio has done that."
