Cahill hopes for England call

Gary Cahill thinks he can secure a place in the England squad with a consistent run of performances for club side Bolton. Both Cahill and team-mate Kevin Davies were included in Fabio Capello's 32-man preliminary squad for England's friendly against Spain but neither made the final trimmed-down selection. The 23-year-old defender dismissed suggestions that Bolton's unglamorous image was the reason Capello overlooked him. "Some people say it is harder to get called up when you are not at a club like Manchester United or Chelsea but I do not think the England manager works like that," Cahill said. "Everyone has a chance if you are playing well and performing. It is down to me to maintain a high level. "If I can do that week in, week out, hopefully it won't go unnoticed and I can get one foot in there. Getting in the full squad would be massive. Then it would be down to me to take my chance. "To be within touching distance means I am more hungry than ever to get there now. I am determined to put in some solid performances until the end of the season." Wanderers are currently 12th in the Premier League and face a clash with Newcastle, who lie two places below them, on Sunday. "It is an important time as we are playing teams in and around us," he added. "We will go into the Newcastle game with confidence, knowing how important it is we win our home matches. "We want to get to that safety mark and push on from there, and we have a good chance of stacking up some points. "This season I feel we have improved and, hopefully, we can soon get back to where the club was a couple of years ago and try and aim for Europe."
