Max Clayton could make long-awaited return against Shrewsbury

Max Clayton could make his return to first-team football when third-placed Bolton host Shrewsbury.

The former Crewe striker is yet to play a league game this season after struggling with hamstring and knee injuries, but played an hour for the development squad during the week.

Boss Phil Parkinson revealed he was likely to see some action over the Christmas period, but Darren Pratley's return from a broken leg has been put back slightly.

Chris Taylor and Jamie Proctor are pushing for starts after impressing alongside Clayton, while James Henry's loan spell is set to be extended until the end of the season.

Striker Ajay Leitch-Smith could return from knee trouble for Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old forward has not featured since being forced off in the goalless draw against former club Port Vale on November 26.

Defender Ryan McGivern will definitely miss the Boxing Day clash, now sidelined for at least two weeks with shoulder trouble.

Forward Shaun Whalley will come into contention for a start after a substitute appearance in the 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.
