Bolton sack Gary Megson

Megson, who arrived at the Reebok in Oct 2007 as successor to the sacked Sammy Lee, was dismissed this morning after fans called for his removal following the Hull draw. [LNB]Former Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson is already an early contender, along with Burnley manager Owen Coyle, who was recommended for the Turf Moor job in Nov 2007 by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside, and Stoke assistant manager Peter Reid. [LNB]Bolton Wanderers are likely to face a fight for Coyle, however, with Burnley unlikely to allow the Scot to leave Turf Moor. Coyle rejected a move to Celtic to stay at Burnley last summer. [LNB]Megson's dismissal proved inevitable as a result of last night's Hull draw. Leading 2-0, Bolton missed the chance to escape the bottom three with two late goals by Stephen Hunt rescuing a point for Phil Brown's team. [LNB]And the failure to hold on for victory, plus Megson's decision to withdraw forward Ivan Klasnic in the closing stages, prompted anti-Megson banners to be unfurled by fans, who booed the manager at the end of the game. [LNB]Former West Brom and Nottingham Forest manager Megson was an unpopular appointment when he replaced Lee two years ago. [LNB]Fans dubbed him 'Gary who?' and called for Gartside to quit following the appointment. [LNB]Despite a four-game unbeaten run in recent weeks, Bolton's tally of 18 points from 18 games prompted Gartside to act this morning. [LNB]The 50-year-old is the third top flight manager to lose his job this term, following Portsmouth's Paul Hart and Mark Hughes at Manchester City. [LNB]And despite twice saving Bolton from relegation, Megson is now facing the New Year as an out of work manager following Bolton's decision to part company. [LNB]
