Bolton edge past battling Rovers

Midfielder Mark Davies' first goal for Bolton ensured they avoided an upset with a narrow 1-0 victory against League One Tranmere in their Carling Cup second round tie at Prenton Park.[LNB]Wanderers looked low on confidence early on but when Davies latched onto namesake Kevin's through-ball to break the deadlock in the 41st minute the pressure was eased.[LNB]Neither side really created many chances of note but after two successive Premier League defeats a first victory of the season came as a welcome relief for Gary Megson's side.[LNB]Tranmere can take encouragement from the way they made things difficult for their top-flight opponents, although visiting goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen remained largely untroubled.[LNB]Johan Elmander should have added a second for Bolton in the 77th minute, only for his close-range header to somehow deflect wide.
