Gary Madine's double helps Bolton to thumping win

Striker Gary Madine headed two goals as Bolton thumped Gillingham 4-0 to climb above Sheffield United and into second place in Sky Bet League One.

Wanderers' win was their 12th from 14 games in all competitions and leaves them just one point behind leaders Scunthorpe.

Madine, who ended a 13-match drought in a recent 3-2 FA Cup win over Sheffield United, converted Josh Vela's brilliant cross after 18 minutes.

And with the Gills threatening to get back into the game after half-time, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward glanced in Jay Spearing's expertly delivered free-kick 25 minutes from time.

In-between, Vela finished a one-two with Zach Clough for his sixth goal of the season.

Against the division's meanest defence, Gillingham were always going to find it tough to win at Bolton for the first time in 30 years. Cody McDonald shot narrowly wide in the opening period and Jake Hessenthaler threatened with a header at 2-0.

But Madine's second sealed the points before Sammy Ameobi rifled in the goal of the night with 10 minutes remaining.
