Ambitious Cahill set sights high

Gary Megson revealed Cahill and Kevin Davies were named in the England "long squad" for the recent friendly against Spain. Although both were later omitted, it was a feather in the cap of a side scrapping to stay in the top flight and who face Newcastle at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday. Cahill said: "Some people say it is harder to get called up when you are not at a club like Manchester United or Chelsea but I do not think the England manager works like that. "Everyone has a chance if you are playing well and performing. It is down to me to maintain a high level. "If I can do that week in, week out, hopefully it won't go unnoticed and I can get one foot in there. "Getting in the full squad would be massive. Then it would be down to me to take my chance. "To be within touching distance means I am more hungry than ever to get there now. I am determined to put in some solid performances until the end of the season." Cahill's priority at the moment is to help steer Bolton to safety and they face Newcastle on the back of a home victory against West Ham. With a trip to Stoke to follow on Wednesday, this could be a crucial spell for the team. Cahill believes a top-10 finish is achievable, and said: "It is an important time as we are playing teams in and around us. "We will go into the Newcastle game with confidence, knowing how important it is we win our home matches. "We want to get to that safety mark and push on from there, and we have a good chance of stacking up some points. "This season I feel we have improved and, hopefully, we can soon get back to where the club was a couple of years ago and try and aim for Europe." Cahill feels he has developed as a player in the 12 months since he left Aston Villa. "I am playing regularly, that's the difference, and my game has come on," said the 23-year-old. "I am enjoying my time and it was a brilliant career move. "But I have still have a lot of learning to do. I am not the finished article. My aim is to be even better in the next 12 months."
