Bochum axe coach Koller

Bochum have axed coach Marcel Koller in the wake of their poor start to the season.

The weekend defeat to Mainz left the club only one place off the foot of the Bundesliga table and led to fan protests.

"We owe Marcel Koller a debt of gratitude," said Bochum's technical director Thomas Ernst in a statement on the club's website.

"Under him, we have been in the top flight for four seasons and we have not managed that since 1993. We wish him well for the future."

Assistant coaches Frank Heinemann and Dariusz Wosz have been placed in caretaker charge of the club.

Koller had been the Bundesliga's second longest-serving coach behind Thomas Schaaf having just begun his fifth season in charge.
