Boca Juniors have been disqualified from the Copa Libertadores after some of their supporters attacked River Plate players with pepper spray during their last-16 second-leg encounter on Thursday.

Four River Plate players were taken to hospital after they were sprayed by Boca fans as they emerged on to the field before the start of the second half of the match at Boca's La Bonbonera stadium in Buenos Aires.

The game, goalless at the time, was subsequently abandoned and South American football federation CONMEBOL took the decision to remove Boca from the competition on Saturday and also issued the club with a US dollar 200,000 (£127,000) fine.

Boca will also have to play their next four continental home games behind doors, while their supporters have been banned from attending the next four away games.

River Plate will now face Brazilian side Cruzeiro in the quarter-finals.
