Blackpool have handed midfielder Keith Southern a new two-year deal to keep him at Bloomfield Road until the summer of 2007.

The former Everton man, who joined in November 2002 after a successful three-month loan spell, has made a dramatic return to form after missing the early part of the season through injury and is now looking to continue his good displays for Colin Hendry's side.

He said: "I am very pleased. A lot of the lads are out of contract at the end of the season and I am pleased that it's out of the way and I can concentrate on my football.

"One or two goals are going in for me, and the team are playing quite well. So it's good all round at the moment."

He added on the club's website: "I feel really fit for the first time. No niggles or injury worries.

"I am playing in a formation that suits me and I am getting a lot of encouragement from the management team to get forward and score goals."

On the news that the tough-tackling player is due to stay at the League One side for another two seasons, first team coach Ian Miller expressed his delight.

He said: "It's excellent news for the club, Keith is in his early twenties and I personally think he has a bright future in front of him and it is great news for the football club.

"Keith has had a decent season and he seems to be getting better with every game, he is at the age where he can improve, I think he still has a lot more to give."
