But he does not feel he has a point to prove, and does not harbour any bad blood against departed manager Gareth Southgate.
"In football, moves either work out or they don't and it was just one of those things at Middlesbrough," he told the Blackpool Gazette.
"I went there with the intention of playing regular football under a new manager in Southgate.
"It started well but then it faded. As it went on ideas changed, but I've got no hard feelings. It is part and parcel of football.
