Blackpool and Cardiff stumble in play-off race

Championship play-off challengers Blackpool, held 3-3 by Leicester, and Cardiff, forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Coventry, both failed to boost their promotion hopes on Wednesday.

Ian Holloway's fifth placed Blackpool took the lead through veteran striker Kevin Phillips' header in the first half, only for Jermaine Beckford and David Nugent to respond with goals either side of half-time to put Leicester ahead.

Substitute Roman Bednar made it 2-2 with 21 minutes remaining before former Everton striker Beckford headed his second.

There was a final twist however as Phillips popped up in stoppage-time with a close-range equaliser.

Blackpool are now only one point ahead of eighth-placed Cardiff, who were just seconds away from moving into the top six before a late Coventry equaliser.

Beaten League Cup finalists Cardiff took an early lead thanks to an own goal from Coventry forward Cody McDonald.

Coventry striker Gary McSheffrey missed a 51st-minute penalty and hit a post before the visitors equalised through Jordan Clarke with 20 minutes remaining.

Peter Whittingham looked to have won it for Cardiff in the 83rd minute, only for Oliver Norwood to strike in the fifth minute of stoppage time to boost Coventry's bid to avoid relegation.

Elsewhere, Michael Chopra's 14th goal of the season earned Ipswich a 1-0 win over Burnley at Portman Road.
