Blackpool dig in to hold Barnsley to a draw

Championship side Barnsley will need a replay to reach the FA Cup fourth round after being held to a 0-0 draw by League Two Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

The hosts almost shocked Barnsley within two minutes, as Andy Taylor picked out Jim McAlister unmarked eight yards out, but he fired wide of the near post.

Blackpool, 49 places below the Tykes in the Football League pyramid, had the only real first-half chances, with another falling to Kyle Vassell after 36 minutes but he struck tamely at Adam Davies from 18 yards.

Barnsley started the second half brightly, with Conor Hourihane's corner after 56 minutes sparking a goalmouth scramble but Sam Winnall could not bundle home.

The Tangerines again created the best opportunities, as Vassell swivelled in the area after 66 minutes and unleashed a powerful shot which was superbly tipped over by Davies.

Both sides had a chance to win it in added time, as Hourihane carved through the Blackpool defence but was denied one-on-one by the legs of Sam Slocombe, before Jamille Matt fired inches over at the other end.
