Webb leaves Hughes in a spin

06 Nov 2006 - 08:46:23

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes has questioned the performance of referee Howard Webb after Rovers slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Hughes was unhappy after Villa were awarded a first-half penalty in controversial circumstances when Chris Sutton's cross struck Andre Ooijer's arm.

Gareth Barry stroked home the spot-kick and Juan Pablo Angel made sure of the points after the break.

"My thoughts, like everyone inside the ground apart from the referee and his assistant, was that it was not a penalty," said Hughes.

"I have seen it again and in no shape or form is it a penalty.

"There are too many decisions going against us at the minute and they are decisions referees need to get right.

"Referees are paid to make big decisions and they need to get them correct. Overall I was not happy with Mr Webb's performance today."
