Victory relief for Hughes
18 Sep 2006 - 10:13:54
Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was a happy man after seeing his side move off the foot of the Premiership table with a 4-2 home win over Manchester City.
Rovers built on an impressive UEFA Cup draw in Salzburg in midweek to record an exciting victory, with Benni McCarthy making it three goals in six games since his summer arrival.
Hughes admitted: "This was a big psychological result for us.
"It was important we won and in particular to win at home where a lot of our success for last season was based.
"There was a real feeling we had to get into winning ways, because although our performances had been okay, you need that first win under your belt.
"We have a platform on which to build, play better football and win more games and I feel this will help us and settle us down.
"In the first half we allowed Manchester City to dictate the play.
"We can look back and reflect that maybe our escapade to Austria took more out of us than we thought.
"But in the second half we got back into it and I sensed a real determination to get the win."
