Surgery sidelines Savage

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage has been ruled out of first-team action for up to five weeks after having knee surgery.

The former Birmingham City star was forced to have a minor operation after a scan revealed he had sustained an injury to his left knee during Rovers' 2-1 victory at Tottenham on Sunday.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website: "It's obviously a blow to Robbie, to the team and the club.

"He'd been playing well and was enjoying being part of a winning team.

"He was very disappointed to miss out on so much of last season with the broken leg, and he doesn't takes these things well initially.

"He has a low period, but he soon gets his head around the situation and then he's fine.

"I feel sorry for him, but the door now opens for someone else over the next few weeks."
