Blackburn Rovers central defender Christopher Samba has signed a new five-year contract to keep him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2012.

The 23-year-old Congo international joined Rovers for a bargain £400,000 from German club Hertha Berlin in January, having impressed during a trial spell in England.

Samba has gone on to score three goals for Rovers in just over 30 first-team appearances to date.

Manager Mark Hughes told the club's official website: "Chris has made a huge impact in a short time with us and is clearly a young man with a big future.

"We are delighted to have secured his services for the long term. He knows much hard work lies ahead, but we are very confident in his ability to continue to progress."

Chairman John Williams added: "Chris has done exceptionally well since joining us in January and the new contract is thoroughly deserved.

"It's also good business for the club in securing the services of a very talented player."
