Sam targets one more win
27 Apr 2009 - 08:16:05
Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce believes one more win will secure their Premier League status following Sunday's 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.
Goals from Benni McCarthy and Ryan Nelsen ensured Rovers won the derby encounter at Ewood Park and moved them six points clear of the drop zone with four games remaining in the season.
"We've got to get one more win which shows you how difficult it is to get out of being in the bottom three in December," said Allardyce.
"We've clawed our way out slowly and we've responded well.
"It's a great show of character from the lads and a fantastic effort.
"The determination everybody showed today really made a difference for us and it is great for us all to go home happy."
Meanwhile, Allardyce praised the performance of Chris Samba after the defender was once again asked to operate as a makeshift striker in the absence through injury of Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts.
"At this stage, we think he's the best we've got to play up there," he added.
"We've tried other combinations which have been a little too lightweight. He showed some good touches and he's certainly a nuisance up there."
