Sam sets sights on striker
02 Jul 2009 - 09:02:02
Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has admitted a new striker is his number one priority this summer.
Rovers sold Roque Santa Cruz to Manchester City last week in an £18million deal, while the future of Benni McCarthy remains in doubt with the South Africa striker linked with a move away from Ewood Park.
Allardyce has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Kevin Davies from former club Bolton Wanderers and bolstering his frontline is the Rovers manager's priority in the coming weeks.
He said: "If all the money I have available has to go on a striker, it has to go on a striker and that is it.
"We are not going to sign any other players in any other positions until we have secured the player up front as quickly as we can."
However, Allardyce has ruled out making an approach to Michael Owen despite the Newcastle United and England striker being available on a free transfer.
"I don't think that we could afford him," he added.
"I think that, from my point of view, with being at Newcastle, it has always been the injury threat.
"I can ill afford to sign a player who is going to be out of the team and has to really guarantee me 30-plus games a year."
