Blackburn Rovers have told captain Ryan Nelsen to rest up in a bid to avoid a fresh bout of hamstring surgery.
The New Zealand defender missed five months of the last campaign following an operation to cure a serious hamstring injury and there were fears the problem had resurfaced in recent weeks.
However, Rovers are confident the 30-year-old can avoid going under the knife for a second time with a spell on the sidelines.
Nelsen has made 24 appearances for the Ewood Park club this season.
"I've been told the scans have shown up what's called a bone projection which is aggravating the tendon, but nothing that points to an operation," said chairman John Williams.
"The preferred treatment is rest, and I think we're probably talking about a couple of weeks to let things settle down again."
