Blackburn's Georgia international defender Zurab Khizanishvili has joined Newcastle United on loan.
Middlesbrough had also been chasing the 27-year-old, who moves to St James' Park on a three-month emergency loan deal.
The former Dundee and Rangers star has spent the last four years at Ewood Park but has failed to start a Premier League game since March.
Meanwhile, Rovers have started contract talks with David Hoilett after the Canadian teenager made an impressive start to the season.
The 19-year-old started the Carling Cup win at Gillingham as well as coming on as a substitute in the Premier League matches with Manchester City and West Ham United.
Hoilett has been with Rovers since the age of 13 and is now in the final year of his contract at the club.
Chairman John Williams confirmed: "Some preliminary discussions have already taken place. It's a work in progress."
