Rovers launch Tugay appeal

20 Nov 2006 - 14:14:21

Blackburn Rovers have launched an appeal to the Football Association following Tugay's dismissal in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham.

The Turkish midfielder had fired a spectacular 25-yard volley home to give Rovers the lead, but was them controversially shown a red card when he conceded a penalty after clattering in to Hossam Ghaly.

Jermain Defoe equalised from the spot but Spurs also ended the game with ten men when Ghaly saw red after elbowing Martin Gray.

After the game Rovers manager Mark Hughes blasted referee Phil O'Dowd's decision to send his player off, saying: "I thought we were absolutely magnificent in the second half, obviously under difficult circumstances as Tugay gets sent off for no reason.

"I was disappointed in the referee's performance and those there to help him, but at the moment those big decisions are going against us and having a real impact on the result in the games that we are taking part in.

"People will tell you that these things will even themselves out but I'm not convinced. On too many occasions this year the big decisions have gone against us.

"I didn't think it was a penalty. I thought the guy skipped inside Tugay and lost his footing. I've seen it time and time again and there's very minimal contact so we feel very aggrieved to be honest.

"Tugay had scored a fantastic goal, had a real influence on the game in a positive way and he gets taken out of the game.

"We're going to have to appeal. I think it's absolutely the wrong decision and we shouldn't be penalised for that. We've been penalised twice, we shouldn't have to be penalised three times."

Tugay's claim will be heard by a Disciplinary Commission on Tuesday.
