Rovers in no Bentley rush
17 Jun 2008 - 07:30:57
Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has warned unsettled midfielder David Bentley that his future won't be discussed until a new manager is in place at Ewood Park.
The England international revealed at the weekend that he wanted to leave the club this summer in search of European football.
Several clubs, including Aston Villa and Liverpool, are reported to be interested in Bentley, but Williams has warned the 23-year-old that his own personal future is far from being top of the club's current priority list.
The former Arsenal trainee has made almost 90 appearances for Rovers following his arrival on a permanent basis in summer 2006.
Rovers expect to appoint a successor to former manager and now Manchester City chief Mark Hughes by the weekend.
"Mark Hughes and I had a meeting with David before the end of the season and he said he wanted to test himself at a higher level," said Williams.
"Mark said to him it would be in both our best interests if he stayed for another year.
"We will not discuss this until the new manager is in place. He may come in and say we should sell this player or that one.
"The one thing the new manager can expect is exactly that degree of backing that we gave to Mark Hughes."
