Rovers expect to progress

03 Oct 2006 - 12:56:55

Blackburn chairman John Williams is pleased with the club's UEFA Cup draw and believes Rovers can progress from a group that includes Feyenoord, Basle, Wisla Krakow and Nancy.

Mark Hughes' side beat Red Bull Salzburg in the first round to qualify for the group stage and Williams is confident they can go on to reach the last 32.

"We're determined to do well and I think the group gives us a chance," he told Sky Sports News.

"My first thought is that it's a good group for us. I hope Mark Hughes thinks so as well.

"This competition is important to us. We've not had a good record (in Europe) and it's time to put that correct.

"Looking at it, with three to qualify we have to be optimistic. We're determined to do well and the group gives us a chance.

"Feyenoord are ninth I gather in the Dutch league at the moment. Obviously we can't pick and choose. I guess travel distances are important. Apart from Poland we seem to have fared well on travel distances."

Blackburn's first game will be at Wisla Krakow on Thursday 19th October followed by a home clash against Basel two weeks later.

They travel to Rotterdam to play Feyenoord on 23rd November before finishing their group games against Nancy at Ewood Park on 13th December.
